A protocol for observing, diagnosing, and navigating hierarchical systems through 4 axes, 12 dimensions, and 5 discrete phase levels. Applicable to organizations, cities, products, teams, partnerships — any system with at least two levels of access or influence.
The protocol describes the direction of system movement, not exact events. Like thermodynamics: it predicts that gas will expand, not where a molecule will fly. It shows where the system will shift given a particular configuration and what transitions are possible. Not when. Not through what event. But in what direction.
Four axes define the state: Z (Identity), Y (Quality), X (Connections), W (Resources). Each axis has three dimensions measured across five discrete phase levels (0–4). Levels are qualitative states, not degrees on a continuous scale. Transitions between levels require events, not accumulation of small steps.
Five rules govern navigation: synchronization, field separation, structural ceiling, small steps vs events, entropy and maintenance. These are not recommendations. They are consequences of structure observed in hierarchical systems across domains.
